The Democratic Republic of Congo competes for the unenviable title of the poorest country in the world. It is estimated that there are at least 25 thousand children on the streets of the capital Kinshasa alone.
This site exists to help raise funds for the operation of three orphanages in Kinshasa housing around 150 children. The "Grace de Dieu" orphanages receive no state funds and are reliant on irregular gifts only.
The material conditions of the orphanages are very poor, with sleeping conditions reminiscent of a concentration camp, no kitchen facilities, minimal hygiene and so on.
We have adopted a girl who was abandoned on the streets of Kinshasa at the age of around nine months in November 2009, and who went on to spend 6 months in the orphanages. Emma is now a thriving, charming toddler. But we cannot forget all the other children who were not so lucky.
Our first target is to collect $9900 needed to purchase 30 bunk beds and mattresses for the children. So far we have collected enough to pay for 5 beds, each of which costs $330 (including two mattresses).
Thank you for any help that you can give!
